Discord Bot Moderation API

Add AI content filtering to your Discord server with your own bot. Detect grooming, harassment, evasion attempts, and custom policy violations in real time. Works alongside Discord AutoMod keyword rules to catch what keyword filters miss.

Paxmod is an API, not a Discord bot

There is no official Paxmod Discord bot. You add Paxmod moderation to your own bot by calling the API from your message handler. The examples below show exactly how to do this.

Test Discord message filtering

Try Paxmod's AI moderation right now. Test messages instantly to see what gets flagged before you integrate.

Why add Paxmod to your Discord bot?

Discord AutoMod handles keyword and regex filtering, but it cannot catch grooming patterns, contextual harassment, or evasion attempts with Unicode lookalikes and leetspeak. Paxmod fills those gaps with real-time AI detection.

Discord integration checklist

  • • Create a Discord bot in the Developer Portal
  • • Get a Paxmod API key from the console
  • • Store the key as PAXMOD_API_KEY (server-side only)
  • • Add the message handler from the examples below
  • • Choose your action: delete, warn, timeout, or log
Discord moderation guide

Get your API key

Start a free trial or create a project in the Paxmod console. Store your API key securely as an environment variable PAXMOD_API_KEY.

Add to your bot

Use the discord.js or discord.py example below to check each message with the Paxmod API before deciding whether to delete or flag it.

Configure actions

Choose how your bot responds to flagged messages: delete, warn, timeout, or log for review. Fail-open design keeps your server running if the API is unreachable.

Discord.js integration (Node.js)

This example checks each message with the Paxmod API and deletes it if flagged. The API key is stored server-side as an environment variable. The bot fails open: if Paxmod is unreachable, messages are allowed so your server keeps running.

Installation

npm install discord.js
# Set environment variable PAXMOD_API_KEY with your key from the console

Example bot code

const { Client, GatewayIntentBits } = require('discord.js');

const client = new Client({
  intents: [
    GatewayIntentBits.Guilds,
    GatewayIntentBits.GuildMessages,
    GatewayIntentBits.MessageContent,
  ],
});

client.on('messageCreate', async (message) => {
  // Skip bots and DMs
  if (message.author.bot || !message.guild) return;

  try {
    const response = await fetch('https://www.paxmod.com/api/v1/text', {
      method: 'POST',
      headers: {
        'Authorization': `Bearer ${process.env.PAXMOD_API_KEY}`,
        'Content-Type': 'application/json',
      },
      body: JSON.stringify({
        message: message.content,
        user_id: message.author.id,
        context_id: message.channel.id,
      }),
    });

    const result = await response.json();

    if (result.content_moderation?.flagged) {
      // Delete the message
      await message.delete();

      // Optional: send a warning
      await message.channel.send(
        `${message.author}, your message was removed: ${result.reason}`
      );

      // Optional: log to a mod channel
      const modChannel = client.channels.cache.get(process.env.MOD_CHANNEL_ID);
      if (modChannel) {
        modChannel.send(
          `Auto-moderation: ${message.author.tag} - ${result.reason}`
        );
      }
    }
  } catch (error) {
    // Fail open: if the API is unreachable, allow the message
    console.error('Paxmod API error:', error);
  }
});

client.login(process.env.DISCORD_TOKEN);

This bot requires the MESSAGE_CONTENT privileged intent. Enable it in the Discord Developer Portal under your bot's settings. Bots in 100+ servers need verification to use this intent.

Discord.py integration (Python)

This Python example shows the same integration using discord.py. The API call is the same HTTP request, just using Python's requests library.

Installation

pip install discord.py requests
# Set environment variable PAXMOD_API_KEY with your key from the console

Example bot code

import discord
import requests
import os

intents = discord.Intents.default()
intents.message_content = True
client = discord.Client(intents=intents)

PAXMOD_API_KEY = os.environ.get('PAXMOD_API_KEY')
MOD_CHANNEL_ID = int(os.environ.get('MOD_CHANNEL_ID', 0))

@client.event
async def on_message(message):
    # Skip bots and DMs
    if message.author.bot or not message.guild:
        return

    try:
        response = requests.post(
            'https://www.paxmod.com/api/v1/text',
            headers={
                'Authorization': f'Bearer {PAXMOD_API_KEY}',
                'Content-Type': 'application/json',
            },
            json={
                'message': message.content,
                'user_id': str(message.author.id),
                'context_id': str(message.channel.id),
            },
            timeout=3,
        )

        result = response.json()

        if result.get('content_moderation', {}).get('flagged'):
            # Delete the message
            await message.delete()

            # Optional: send a warning
            await message.channel.send(
                f"{message.author.mention}, your message was removed: {result['reason']}"
            )

            # Optional: log to a mod channel
            if MOD_CHANNEL_ID:
                mod_channel = client.get_channel(MOD_CHANNEL_ID)
                if mod_channel:
                    await mod_channel.send(
                        f"Auto-moderation: {message.author} - {result['reason']}"
                    )

    except Exception as error:
        # Fail open: if the API is unreachable, allow the message
        print(f'Paxmod API error: {error}')

client.run(os.environ['DISCORD_TOKEN'])

Remember to enable the MESSAGE_CONTENT privileged intent in the Discord Developer Portal. Without it, message.content will be empty.

Advanced configuration

Actions beyond delete

  • • Delete only: remove the message, no other action
  • • Delete and warn: send a DM or channel warning
  • • Timeout: use message.member.timeout() to mute the user
  • • Log for review: send flagged content to a mod channel
  • • Escalate: track repeat offenders and ban after N flags

Category-based actions

The API returns which categories were flagged. Use them to customize actions:

if (result.content_moderation.categories.Sexual?.flagged) {
  // Immediate timeout for sexual content
  await message.member.timeout(3600000); // 1 hour
} else if (result.content_moderation.categories.Harassment?.flagged) {
  // Warning for harassment
  await message.channel.send('Warning: harassment detected');
}
Discord bots cannot pre-block messages. Messages appear briefly before your bot deletes them. For instant pre-block of obvious slurs, layer Discord's native AutoMod keyword rules with Paxmod for the contextual cases keyword rules miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Paxmod compare with Discord AutoMod keyword rules?

Discord AutoMod uses keyword and regex patterns. Paxmod adds context-aware AI checks that detect grooming, evasion attempts (like leetspeak and Unicode lookalikes), and policy violations that keyword rules miss. Use both together: AutoMod for instant pre-block of obvious slurs, Paxmod for the contextual cases.

Is Paxmod an official Discord bot?

Paxmod is an HTTP API, not an official Discord bot. You add Paxmod moderation to your own Discord bot by calling the API from your message handler, as shown in the examples on this page.

What is the latency for Discord message checks?

Paxmod returns moderation decisions in under 500ms. Messages are deleted after they appear (Discord bots cannot pre-block messages), so users may briefly see flagged content before your bot removes it.

Which languages does Paxmod support for Discord?

Paxmod supports over 120 languages. The API automatically detects the language and applies the same moderation rules you configured in the console.

How much does Paxmod cost for Discord moderation?

The Indie plan is $29 per month with 50,000 message credits and is built for small Discord servers and gaming communities. Studio is $149 per month with 500,000 credits. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial: 10,000 messages and every feature.
